Plastic Surgery Malaysia Reviews Roundup [Update]

When we analyzed our back end analytics, it left me perplexed that people are doing research on plastic surgery using these phrases like 'best plastic surgery', 'best cosmetic surgery' and 'best plastic surgeon' still.

Its understandable that you would like to have the best but there are just too many factors to consider. Although a ranking system like some countries have on their hospitals and doctors would be helpful but we do not have similar established system at the moment. If you know of any, please share the information under the comments section.

As mentioned previously, I am not aware of any surgeon who can claim that he is the ‘best’ plastic surgeon in town. There are no established clinical performance metrics to measure the competence of a particular surgeon at the moment in Malaysia. Even there is such a performance measurement system; the performance of a particular surgeon does vary from patient to patient as well as from time to time.

In general, I would select a surgeon based on experience and training as well as feedback from other surgeons, doctors or patients. Its also important to take into consideration ‘where’ the plastic surgery is to be performed. Liposuction in particular requires ‘general anesthesia’ and needs to be performed in a well equipped hospital with the presence of a qualified anesthetist.

However, we have decided to attempt to address the issue or rather try to manage your expectation over your search for the 'best'. We have tried to list the plastic surgeons according to their years of experience and also summarised some key things you should look into before deciding to do a cosmetic surgery procedure.

Using Google to find the best plastic surgery in Malaysia?

Try Google various plastic surgery related phrases. You will get a list of search results and the top ones and the ones on the right column are advertisements.

Bear in mind that the plastic surgeon's high ranking on page 1 and visible advertisements on Google may not be truly reflective of the surgeon's skills, experience and also how 'safe' is the surgeon. I suggest you go through all the links on page 1 and 2; and shortlist a few plastic surgeons and plastic surgery centres.

So, how do you shortlist the few? Call up the centers and make your enquiries. Filter out those that are not able to provide you with the right information. A poorly trained staff tends to be a reflection of the centre as well. Do understand that a plastic surgery procedure requires team effort and poor resource support is a risk factor to the surgical procedure. A good cosmetic surgery standard operating procedure requires proper pre-consultation as well as proper post-procedure management.

Next, you Google again the prospective plastic surgeon’s name and the centre; and add in the keywords ‘forums’ or ‘reviews’ to see what other people have to say about them. If you know a friend or relative who has an operation done before, make sure that you talk to her. However, make sure she is a trusted friend. Some centres or surgeons do offer commission scheme or ‘patient get patient’ referral scheme. Therefore, do not just rely on information provided by a single person. Do your research thoroughly. A surgery is a surgery. Mistakes do happen.

Conclusion

After going through the above reviews, it is clear that some of you are still not very clear of the type of medical aesthetic practitioners in Malaysia and what they can do and cannot do. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Health guidelines on medical aesthetic practice, there are three categories of medical aesthetic practitioners in general:
  1. General Practitioners
  2. Medical Specialists e.g. Dermatologists
  3. Surgical Specialists e.g. Plastic Surgeons, Oculo-plastic eye surgeons etc.
  • Major invasive procedures such as breast augmentation with breast implants, and liposuction (more than 1 litre aspirate) under general anaesthesia are only allowed to be performed by surgical specialists e.g. registered plastic surgeons.
  • Eyelid surgeries can only be performed by either a plastic surgeon or an oculo-plastic surgeon in a premise with minor surgery room or operation theatre; and not in hotel room.
Hope the above will help you to decide which plastic surgeon you should choose. Please feel free to contact us if you need assistance in finding the right cosmetic surgery clinic in Malaysia.
